After several failed businesses, Milton Hershey finally succeeded with his 3rd caramel company. But while at the 1893 World Exposition in Chicago, He became fascinated with chocolate. He purchased the equipment and worked for years to perfect a recipe for milk chocolate which had been a closely held secret by the Swiss. By 1900 he sold his caramel company and devoted all of his attention to chocolate. In 1903, while traveling through Pennsylvania on their way west, the Cowgirls toured Hershey’s state of the art chocolate factory where they tasted their first American made milk chocolate bar.
